Church tax / Giving

In Denmark, only the Protestant Folkekirke enjoys financial support from the state. All other faith denominations – including the Catholic Church – are responsible for their own finances. Therefore, all Catholics are expected to contribute to the running of their parish by signing a so-called kirkeskat agreement; an amount equivalent to at least 1% of your taxable income is recommended. The taxable income is shown on the tax authorities’ annual statement (“årsopgørelse”). NB: Kirkeskat is considered a donation to charity and can therefore be deducted from taxable income – read more here.
